One lightbulb in the centre stands out — it is brighter than the others and has a smiling face and a red tie, suggesting it thinks differently from the group. When Your Client Has ADHD

ADHD + Customer Stress | Business Tips | Tradie Coach

You've had this client. You know the one.

They change the scope three times before you even start. They ask the same question five times in a row. They can't make a decision to save their life. Then they get frustrated when the job takes longer than the original quote.

You've probably written them off as difficult, time wasting, or just plain annoying.

But here's a perspective worth considering: a good chunk of your most "difficult" clients aren't actually difficult. They have ADHD. And understanding that changes how you deal with them.

What ADHD looks like from the client side

At its core, ADHD makes it harder for someone's brain to plan, stay organised and hold information in their head long enough to act on it. For your client, this can look like:

  • Asking the same question more than once because they genuinely don't remember your last answer

  • Changing the scope because they can't picture the finished result until they see it taking shape

  • Struggling to settle on decisions (tiles, fixtures, finishes) that seem simple to you

  • Coming across as impatient or short, when it's often anxiety about losing track of the whole process

This isn't deliberate time wasting. Their brain works differently when it comes to organising and remembering things, and that makes your job harder and their life harder too.

3 ways to ADHD proof your quotes and client communication

1. Write everything down from day one. Send a short summary after every conversation, even just a WhatsApp message: "Just confirming we agreed to X, Y and Z." This cuts down on scope creep because there's always something to point back to when a detail gets forgotten.

2. Break decisions into small, single steps. Don't ask a client to choose everything at once. Give one decision at a time with a deadline: "Can you confirm the tile choice by Thursday?" instead of a five part list due by the end of the week.

3. Build scope change clauses into your quotes. Add a clear written line: "Any changes to scope after sign-off will be quoted separately and approved in writing before work proceeds." This protects you and removes any ambiguity.

The business opportunity in difficult clients

Most tradies avoid clients they find hard to manage. If you build simple systems to handle them well (clear written communication, single step decisions, a defined change process) you become the tradie they refer to everyone, because you're the one who actually gets them.

Word of mouth from a client who felt genuinely understood? That's worth more than another ad.
